dharma
[info]buddhagrrl's entry about finding Buddhadharma in Bahai writings reminded me of one of my favorite Catholic writings. Though hardly obscure, it remains very dear to me. The author was clearly a bodhisattva.

Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon,
Where there is doubt, faith,
Where there is despair, hope,
Where there is darkness, light,
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled, as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned
And it is in dying to self that we are born to eternal life.

Ooh - beautiful. I've never seen it before. Certainly adds weight to the theory that all the wisdom traditions of the earth are merely different branches of the same stream.

Especially the bit about dying to self - nice. :)

To be fair, I must admit that the last line is more often written without "to self," giving it a slightly different flavor. I don't know the story behind the two different translations.
